Echo (An Elegy)

Your words spoke deep
into the abyss, as though
you were calling my name
but all that I received were echoes.

Echoes that were faint, and small,
the ones that sound familiar
though different in their tone.

Echoes that reminded me of your
comical ways, your contagious laughter
that made my stomach ache.

Echoes that reminded me of your
individual ways, your sense of style
that always stood out.

Echoes that reminded me of your
favourite songs, your singing would
bellow through the walls.

And echoes that filled the room of you.

One night, the echo pulsed slowly,
and faintly, and our time was running out.
I thought I had you, but my echo had gone.
